A heat pump is worth serious consideration in Central Texas because the climate is the one the equipment was built for: long cooling seasons and short, mild winters. In Leander, Cedar Park and the rest of Williamson County a heat pump does the same cooling job as a regular air conditioner all summer, then heats the house through most winter nights without a furnace. Whether it is the right call for your house depends on what you heat with now and how you feel about the coldest week of the year.
What is the difference between a heat pump and an air conditioner?
A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run backwards. Carrier, the manufacturer we install, puts it in one sentence: a heat pump can reverse its operation to provide heating, whereas an air conditioner only cools. In summer both move heat from inside the house to outside. In winter a reversing valve lets the heat pump pull warmth out of the outdoor air, even when that air is cold, and move it indoors.
That is why ENERGY STAR describes a certified air-source heat pump as providing heating and cooling by extracting heat from outside into your home in winter and pulling the heat out of your home in the summer. From the outside the two units look identical. The difference is the valve and the controls, and the fact that one of them replaces your furnace.
Why heat pumps suit Leander and Cedar Park
Because a heat pump moves heat instead of making it, ENERGY STAR says an air-source heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes. Compare that with the electric resistance strips or the electric furnace that heat a large share of Central Texas homes: those turn one unit of electricity into one unit of heat, and a heat pump turns the same electricity into more.
That matters here more than in most states. The Energy Information Administration's 2020 survey lists electricity as the main space heating fuel in 51 percent of Texas homes, 5.27 million of them, with natural gas at 42 percent. Yet only 19 percent of Texas homes, 1.95 million, heat with a central heat pump; 61 percent use a furnace. If your furnace is electric, you are paying for resistance heat in a climate where a heat pump would carry almost the whole winter. Carrier's own guidance is that a heat pump is the choice for a region with moderate winters where electricity is cheaper than fossil fuels, and that a plain air conditioner makes sense where heating is rarely needed or where you already have a reliable, high-efficiency furnace you plan to keep.
What about the cold nights?
A heat pump keeps working below freezing, but it works harder. Carrier notes that in extremely cold climates heat pump efficiency drops as the unit strains to extract heat from the air. ENERGY STAR now tests cold-climate certified models down to 5°F, which is colder than a typical Williamson County winter night, and a heat pump air handler carries supplemental electric heat for the nights the outdoor unit needs help.
If you already have a gas furnace, there is a third answer. Carrier describes pairing a heat pump with a furnace as a dual fuel system that relies on the heat pump for mild days and switches to the furnace only when temperatures plunge. Around here that means the furnace runs on the few coldest nights and the heat pump does everything else.
The honest trade-offs
A heat pump runs all year, and its lifespan reflects that. Carrier puts a typical heat pump at 10 to 15 years, reaching 20 with good installation and regular maintenance, against 15 to 20 years for a maintained air conditioner that sits idle from November to March. A heat pump also asks you to run the thermostat differently: ENERGY STAR notes that, unlike a furnace, a heat pump does not save energy when you turn the setting down while away or asleep, and recommends a consistent temperature.
The efficiency floor is set by federal rule either way. Texas is in the Department of Energy's hot-humid Southeast region, where a split-system heat pump made on or after January 1, 2023 must be at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2, and a split-system air conditioner installed here at least 14.3 SEER2 under 45,000 Btu per hour. Installation quality moves the real number more than the label does: ENERGY STAR reports that improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent, which is why sizing and ductwork get checked before we quote either system.
The tax credit people are asking about
The federal credit for air-source heat pumps has ended. ENERGY STAR's tax credit page states that it applied to products purchased and installed between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2025. A heat pump installed in Leander in 2026 does not qualify for it, and any quote that assumes it does is out of date. Utility programs change on their own schedules, so ask us what is current when you get a quote rather than relying on a page written last year.
How we handle it
If you heat with electric resistance and your air conditioner is due, a heat pump usually replaces both in one outdoor unit, and we walk through that on the heating replacement visit. If you have a good gas furnace, a new air conditioner or a dual fuel heat pump on top of that furnace are the two options, and the choice turns on your gas and electric rates. Either way the thermostat has to be one that knows which system it is running.
